The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has announced a temporary suspension of the ongoing 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership, placing all matches on hold after the conclusion of Week 7 fixtures.

 

The decision followed a formal complaint submitted to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by one of the participating clubs, which was affected by the invitation of more than five of its players to the national U-20 team camp. The league noted that the development significantly weakened the club’s ability to field a competitive team during the affected period.

 

In a statement signed by the NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, the league management said the suspension was necessary to promote fairness and preserve the competitive integrity of the championship.

 

According to the statement, the league will resume with Week 8 fixtures on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

 

The NWFL also disclosed that due to a congested calendar for the 2025/2026 season, the Premiership will observe only a one-week mid-season break, which is shorter than the usual recess.

 

Revised fixtures reflecting the adjusted schedule have been circulated to all participating clubs, with the league urging them to take note of the changes and comply fully.

 

The NWFL reiterated its commitment to orderly league management while balancing domestic football with national team responsibilities, as Nigeria continues preparations for upcoming youth international competitions.
