This is not a rhetorical question. It is a sincere one—asked on behalf of fans, the media, and football stakeholders across the South East and Nigeria as a whole.

 

The question demands clear answers from the key stakeholders: the Abia State Government, the management of Enyimba FC, and the coaching crew. As members of the media, we have speculated, analysed permutations, and followed developments closely, yet we are still unable—without equivocation or guesswork—to state with certainty who truly controls the direction, decisions, and soul of Nigeria’s most successful football club.

 

Let’s Establish the Facts

 

Following the assumption of office by the Abia State Government under Dr. Alex Otti, a sweeping overhaul of Enyimba FC’s management structure took place. On July 12, 2023, one of Nigeria’s greatest football icons, Nwankwo Kanu, was appointed to lead the club’s new era. Kanu subsequently appointed key figures, including Sporting Director Ifeanyi Ekwueme, among others—but for clarity, we will focus on the principal actors.

 

At the time, Kanu inherited Finidi George and Coach Yemi Olaruwaju. Finidi later exited to take up the Super Eagles job, while Yemi Olaruwaju completed the 2023/2024 season.

 

Popularly known as Yema, Olaruwaju was confirmed as the substantive head coach of the nine-time NPFL champions ahead of the 2024/2025 season. His tenure, however, was short-lived.

 

It is important to stress that this is not a critique of results or performance. The central issue here is power, structure, organisation, and decision-making at Enyimba FC.

 

Following Yema’s dismissal, one of the NPFL’s longest-serving coaches, Stanley Azubuike Eguma—formerly of Rivers United—was appointed in December 2024. His reign, however, proved equally brief, doing little to alter the club’s trajectory.

 

Eguma was soon relieved of his duties, and Deji Ayeni was appointed interim coach on November 28, 2025. Barely weeks later, on January 18, 2026, the club confirmed Ayeni as substantive head coach.

 

Just as the dust seemed to settle, the media space was flooded with a government press release on January 25, 2026, announcing that Governor Alex Otti had approved the appointment of Deutsch Detchoua Gustave Emmanuel as the new Head Coach of Enyimba FC.

 

The statement read in part:

“The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has approved the appointment of Coach Deutsch Detchoua Gustave Emmanuel as the new Head Coach of Enyimba International Football Club, Aba.”

 

It went further to reaffirm Enyimba’s status as Nigeria’s most decorated club and one of Abia State’s most valuable sporting brands on the continent.

 

Naturally, this announcement raised eyebrows. Coming barely weeks after Deji Ayeni’s confirmation, many observers asked—half in disbelief—“What exactly is going on?” To some, it did not look like government interference but rather decisive action by an administration frustrated by years of decline. To others, it was textbook interference in football matters.

 

Then came the silence.

 

Minutes turned into hours, hours into days, days into weeks—and yet, Enyimba FC has still not officially unveiled Deutsch Gustave Emmanuel as head coach.

 

In the midst of this uncertainty, Ifeanyi Ekwueme exited the club—whether by resignation or dismissal remains unclear. Shortly after, the Abia State Government intervened again, appointing Daniel Eke as Sporting Director and former Super Eagles defender Uche Okechukwu as a board member on February 1, 2026.

 

That announcement read in part:

“In line with the resolve of the Abia State Government to restore Enyimba FC to its rightful place among Africa’s elite clubs… His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has approved the appointment of Mr. Daniel Eke as the new Sporting Director of Enyimba International Football Club, Aba.”

 

Despite the government’s public declaration appointing Deutsch, Deji Ayeni has remained in charge of the team for the club’s most recent matches. This brings to mind a conversation I had with someone close to the club, who remarked—paraphrased—“This is politics; the takeover hasn’t been formalised yet.”

 

Which brings us back to the fundamental question:

 

Who is really in charge at Enyimba FC of Aba?

 

At this critical juncture, what the club desperately needs is clarity—clear leadership, coherent structure, and the right people with the vision, competence, and authority to return Enyimba to where it truly belongs.
