Nasarawa United Soar to NPFL Summit After 2-0 Victory Over Katsina United United delivered a commanding performance on Sunday afternoon, defeating Katsina United 2-0 at the Lafia City Stadium in their Matchday 6 fixture of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

 

The Solid Miners showcased tactical brilliance and attacking intent, with goals from last season’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf, and right-back Abubakar Abdullahi, sealing a deserved win in front of an ecstatic home crowd.

 

Yusuf opened the scoring with a thunderous 35-metre strike on the brink of halftime, giving Nasarawa United the momentum heading into the second half. The second goal came in the 73rd minute through team captain Abdullahi, whose composed finish capped off an impressive individual performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.

 

“I feel great and return all glory to Almighty Allah for scoring the second goal for my team — my first this season,” said Abdullahi after the game. “I had it in my mind to score today, and I am grateful God granted my heart’s desire.”

 

With the win — their third consecutive home victory — Nasarawa United climb to the top of the NPFL table, amassing 13 points from six games (four wins, one draw, and one loss), and a goal difference of +4. Katsina United remain in 4th place with 9 points.

 

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Mangut Mbwas praised his side’s performance but urged caution moving forward.

 

“It’s a thing of joy to win today. Our response was great because we have been working so hard,” Mbwas said.

“We actually planned for this. We have to remain focused — it’s not time for celebration yet because the league is a marathon, and still at its infancy.”

 

The coach acknowledged the missed opportunities in front of goal but expressed optimism about the team’s progress.

 

“We should have scored more than two goals today. My players are over-anxious in front of goal, but we’re working to correct that. The team is growing in confidence, game in, game out. I believe we could win anywhere.”

 

On the other side, Katsina United’s Coach Azeez Muhammad admitted his team fell short in the second half.

 

“It’s a normal game, but we lost our heads in the second half and failed to convert our chances. They took theirs, and the better side won,” he said, while also praising the officiating as “good” and free of controversy.

 

To cap off a memorable day for the club, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, fulfilled a ₦500,000 cash reward promised to the team for a win. He was joined in the stands by top state officials, including the House of Assembly’s Committee Chairman on Youth and Sports, Hon. Mohammed Garba Isimbabi, and Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan, Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry.

 

Looking ahead, Nasarawa United will aim to extend their unbeaten run when they face Bendel Insurance in Benin City next weekend, followed by a crucial home fixture against Rangers International FC in Lafia.
