President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday charged the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to restore peace and reinforce security across the country.

 

Tinubu gave the directive during the swearing-in and decoration ceremony of Disu at the State House in Abuja, describing his appointment as coming at a critical time for Nigeria’s security landscape.

 

“For you to assume this responsibility, I know your record. I believe in the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

 

He noted that the new police chief was assuming office at a defining moment for national security.

 

“You assume this responsibility at a defining moment for our nation’s security. I expect you to strengthen discipline, enhance inter-agency collaboration and restore peace,” Tinubu stated.

 

The President further urged Disu to rebuild public trust in the Nigeria Police Force by promoting professionalism and fairness within the ranks.

 

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that safety of lives and property remains our highest priority,” he said.

 

“It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word; you have my full support,” Tinubu added.

 

Highlighting Nigeria’s current security challenges, the President pointed to banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality, urging the Acting IGP to be innovative and strategic in tackling them.

 

“You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them. Nigeria will prevail,” he affirmed.

 

Tinubu also paid tribute to the outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commending his service to the nation.

 

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.

 

In his response, Disu expressed gratitude to the President for the confidence reposed in him, noting that the appointment came at a time he least expected it.
