"Reclaiming AWCON Trophy, Our Topmost Prioritity"....Gusau

 

 Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau  has said that his eyes are set to reclaiming the AWCON trophy which the country won last in 2019.

Gusau said his administration Is focused on meticulous preparation and local talent development.

 Speaking further on the team’s roadmap to achieving the idea, the former Zamfara State FA boss highlighted the team’s determination and strategy to achieve success, stating, “As far as I am concerned, the trophy belongs to Nigeria, and that’s why we are not taking any chances.”

"To ensure the team is well-prepared, every FIFA window will be utilized for friendly matches, giving the players critical opportunities to fine-tune their skills and build team cohesion.

He revealed plans to leverage two upcoming FIFA windows before the tournament, underlining the importance of these matches in shaping the team’s readiness.

Additionally, he said the Nigerian Football Federation is committed to integrating young talents from the local league into the national team. This approach proved successful during the two-legged friendly match against Algeria held in Lagos. He noted that the inclusion of six or seven homegrown players contributed significantly to the team’s performance during a recent friendly match in France.

“We are looking at injecting young talents from our local league to bring a positive impact into the team. This strategy has already yielded results,” he added. 

He said the team remains focused on continued improvement, refusing to rely solely on existing players, and is committed to building a well-rounded squad capable of dominating on the international stage.
