NNL Matchday 5: Okechukwu Ejeh Hails Players as Abia Comets Maintain Unbeaten Run
Abia Comets FC head coach, Okechukwu Ejeh, expressed his delight at his team’s continued unbeaten streak in the 2024/25 Nigeria National League (NNL) after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ijele FC at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The win solidifies Abia Comets’ position at the top of the Southern Conference A standings with 11 points from five matches.
The Comets opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a powerful strike from Okechukwu Chukwu, assisted by Ebuka Lazarus. The visitors dominated possession, but Lazarus was denied a second goal by Ijele’s goalkeeper, leaving the scoreline 1-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half, coach Ejeh introduced Emeka Maduka to bolster the attack, a move that paid off as Okechukwu Chukwu completed his brace in the 57th minute, capitalizing on Cyril Shedrack’s pressing play.
Although Ijele FC pulled one back in the 87th minute via a penalty, the defensive duo of Bright Ogbonna and Churchill Nnanna ensured Abia Comets secured the 2-1 victory.
Coach Ejeh praised his team for their performance:
“I’m super proud of my boys. Goalkeeper Odoani Sunday has been fantastic—we’ve only conceded three goals in five matches. Special credit to Okechukwu Chukwu for his brace and to the entire squad for maintaining discipline and focus. The team is still a work in progress, but we’re on the right path.”
Abia Comets will host Inter Lagos FC at the Umuahia Township Stadium in their next match as they look to extend their unbeaten run and maintain their lead at the top of the standings.
