Nigeria's Folashade Oluwafemiayo made history on Sunday, September 8, 2024, by breaking her own World Record in the women's over 86kg Para-Powerlifting event at the 2024 Paralympics. The powerlifting sensation lifted an incredible 166kg, surpassing her previous record of 165kg, to claim the gold medal.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for Oluwafemiayo, who becomes the first Para-athlete to lift 166kg in the women's over 86kg category. Her record-breaking performance has taken Nigeria's overall medal tally at the Paralympics to seven.

Earlier, Flora Ugwunwa secured a silver medal in the Women's Javelin F54 category with a remarkable throw of 19.26 meters, while Bose Omolayo lifted an impressive 145kg to claim the silver medal in the Women's 79kg Para Powerlifting category. Isau Ogunkunle earned a bronze medal in the Men's Singles Class 4 Para Table Tennis event, becoming the first Nigerian athlete to win an individual medal in Para Table Tennis since the Sydney 2000 Games.

Reacting to the achievements, Senator Enoh expressed pride and admiration for the Nigerian Paralympic athletes, stating, "Their dedication, resilience, and passion embody the true spirit of Nigeria, and they continue to inspire millions with their remarkable achievements."

The Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting para-sports and ensuring that Nigerian athletes receive the necessary backing to succeed on the international stage. "Our champions have shown once again that disability is not a limitation. As a nation, we remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all athletes, regardless of ability, can thrive and make us proud on the global stage."

Folashade Oluwafemiayo, a Nigerian Paralympian athlete, was born on March 11, 1985, in Jos, Plateau State. She has won numerous accolades, including a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, a gold medal at the 2017 World Para Powerlifting Championships, and a gold medal at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships. Oluwafemiayo also won a gold medal in the heavyweight event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
