The Association of Nigeria Women in Sports (NAWIS) has joined millions of well-meaning Nigerians in celebrating the triumphant D’Tigress, Nigeria’s senior women’s national basketball team, after they claimed an unprecedented fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title on Sunday in Côte d’Ivoire.

 

In a thrilling final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, D’Tigress overcame a shaky start against Mali’s Aigles Dames, losing the first quarter 21-26, but bounced back with grit and skill to level scores 41-41 at halftime. The Nigerian side then dominated the second half, winning both the third and fourth quarters to seal a resounding 75-58 victory, securing a historic “five-peat” and their seventh overall continental title.

 

In a statement released on Monday, NAWIS President, Professor Adefunke Mariam Suleiman, hailed the team’s achievement as a symbol of excellence in Nigerian sports.

 

“Winning a fifth straight title is a remarkable and incredible feat. It is a testament to the team’s dedication, perseverance, and exceptional skill. We commend the players, coaches, and entire support staff for their tireless efforts in bringing glory to Nigeria.”

 

NAWIS, the umbrella body dedicated to the welfare and development of both active and retired Nigerian sportswomen, also praised the influence D’Tigress’ success would have on upcoming athletes.

 

The association’s founder, Professor Emeritus Bola Adeyanju, added:

 

“D’Tigress has consistently demonstrated their dominance in Africa. This eye-catching victory, alongside the impressive performance of the Super Falcons at the global stage, will no doubt inspire a new generation of young Nigerian athletes and captivate millions of sports-loving Nigerians.”

 

Both sports icons emphasized that D’Tigress’ triumph showcases what can be achieved through hard work, team spirit, and determination. They also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Presidency for the national recognition, reception, and financial reward given to the team.

 

“We are proud to see Nigerian athletes excel on the international stage,” they stated. “We look forward to seeing D’Tigress continue to make history and bring pride to our great nation on the global stage.”

 

Earlier this afternoon, the victorious D’Tigress contingent — including players, coaches, and team officials — arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 2:30 pm, before proceeding straight to Aso Rock Villa for a Presidential Reception hosted in their honour.
