For one dramatic case for Siaya Court, Kenya, 49-year-old Truphena Aswani, wey dem accuse say she kill her husband, don get only one day jail, because court say she act in self-defence.

 

The gbege happen on December 14, 2020, when Aswani kill her husband, James Oyengo Obochi, for Ugenya, Siaya County. Aswani, wey be the third wife, talk say she no guilty, she just defend her life from her violent husband.

 

Justice Roselyne Aburuli talk say, based on wetin happen, Aswani no need big jail time. She deserve non-custodial sentence so she fit do counselling and recover from the trauma wey she don go through.

 

“Make una remember am as person wey escape from lion teeth, no as person wey dey let hyena chop am,” Justice Aburuli advise.

 

She also warn men and women say make dem run comot from abusive marriage to save their lives. “No love worth losing your life. If situation bad, find way escape,” she talk.

 

Court talk say Aswani no wan leave her husband because she love am and dem get pikin, she still dey hope say husband go change. Even her other two co-wives don comot because of the husband violence.

 

Court also approve money for travel make Aswani fit move go safe place wey no be her old matrimonial home. Probation officer go also arrange counselling sessions make she fit recover from the wahala.

 

Aswani don plea bargain with DPP, so dem reduce the charge from murder to manslaughter. She tell court say for that night, her husband come house drunk, dey ask for title deed of land wey she inherit from late father-in-law. She refuse give am because she sabi say if e get am, e go sell am.

 

Court give judgement as Kenya dey mark International Women’s Day, talk say Aswani case dey show say survivors of domestic violence get right to defend themselves.
