The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed heartfelt gratitude on Tuesday for the warm words of encouragement from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the Super Eagles’ challenging return from their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in Libya.

In a statement released on Monday, President Tinubu welcomed the team back to Nigeria and called for prompt justice from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in light of the inhumane treatment experienced by the Nigerian delegation. He also commended the effective coordination between the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, which ensured the safe return of the players.

“We extend our deepest appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his encouraging words. This support has reassured the players of the Government’s and the nation’s backing for their efforts and sacrifices in representing Nigeria,” Gusau said.

He highlighted the commitment of the Government and the Nigerian people, as demonstrated by the presence of the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, at the airport to welcome the team home.

“Mr. President, as the father of the nation, has once again shown his dedication and interest in football, a sport that unites us across various divides—mental, physical, spiritual, political, and economic. Football fosters national unity and friendship among people and nations.”

Gusau, who led the delegation to Libya, also commended the captain and crew of the ValueJet aircraft for their diligence and professionalism during the trip. He praised Captain Abdul-Latif and his team for their patience, kindness, and support, which eased the journey for the contingent.

“The captain and crew were outstanding. I especially commend Captain Abdul-Latif for his professionalism and his efforts to negotiate with airport officials to arrange transportation for the team. Despite being offered hotel accommodation, he chose to sleep on the aircraft with the rest of the crew rather than accept preferential treatment, showcasing great maturity and kindness.”

Gusau concluded, “We will always remember the dedication of the captain and crew, and we are grateful for their support during a difficult time.”
