Governor Hyacinth Alia has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the Plateau State Government and its people following the tragic killing of innocent citizens, describing the incident as reminiscent of the devastating Yelwata crisis that shook Benue State in 2025.

 

Speaking with profound emotion, Governor Alia condemned the senseless loss of lives, particularly the massacre of university students at Angwa Rukuba, which occurred during the solemn period of Palm Sunday—a day Christians worldwide commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. He described the attack as both heartbreaking and unacceptable, noting that such violence undermines the sanctity of human life and peaceful coexistence.

 

The Governor drew a painful parallel to the Yelwata incident in Benue State, where over 200 lives were lost in a brutal and unexpected attack. According to him, that tragedy nearly tore the state apart and left lasting scars on families and communities. He emphasized that the memory of Yelwata remains fresh, making the Plateau incident even more distressing and personal.

 

Governor Alia reiterated that his emergence into office was not driven by bloodshed, occult practices, or reliance on ancestral deities, but rather through what he described as a divine mission affirmed by the overwhelming support and unanimous vote of the Benue people. He stressed that his leadership is rooted in faith, service, and a commitment to preserving life.

 

Referencing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ at Mount Calvary, the Governor called on citizens to embrace love, which he described as the greatest commandment—one that surpasses all offerings and sacrifices. He noted that Christ’s sacrifice was meant to redeem humanity and soften hardened hearts, urging Nigerians to reflect these values in their daily lives.

 

In response to the Plateau tragedy, Governor Alia announced his immediate intervention by deploying Benue Link buses to assist in evacuating affected students from university hostels and surrounding areas to safer locations. He explained that this swift action was motivated by his deep respect for human life and his desire to prevent further casualties.

 

The Governor highlighted that upon assuming office, he had already taken steps to ease the burden of transportation for citizens by providing Benue Link vehicles. He noted that extending this support to Plateau State was a natural response in a time of shared grief and national concern.

 

Speaking further on the sanctity of life, Governor Alia warned against the shedding of blood, describing it as a sacred element with spiritual significance. He cautioned that taking a life not only destroys the present but can also erase future generations yet unborn. Drawing from biblical teachings, he referenced the trials of Job and the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot, emphasizing the consequences of actions driven by greed, hatred, or spiritual ignorance.

 

He strongly advised against engaging in blood money, occult practices, or any form of diabolical activity, noting that such paths ultimately lead to regret, torment, and destruction. According to him, no political ambition or personal gain is worth the cost of human life.

 

Governor Alia also used the opportunity to highlight key initiatives of his administration, particularly the introduction of free education in Benue State. He explained that this policy is designed to empower citizens with knowledge, broaden their perspectives, and prepare them to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and digital world.

 

He stressed that the attack in Plateau State has left many parents devastated, as they had placed their hopes and dreams in their children. He described the incident as an emotional blow not only to the affected families but to the entire nation, reiterating that “what affects one state should concern all.”

 

With a firm tone, the Governor warned citizens against involvement in secret societies and unlawful activities, whether within tertiary institutions or in the wider society. He called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior, assuring that those found guilty of such acts would face the full weight of the law. He also warned that institutions found harboring such activities risk closure.

 

Governor Alia reaffirmed that his leadership is divinely ordained and that he would never endorse or support any act that contradicts the commandments of God, including the taking of human life. He declared that no political consideration would ever compel him to approve actions that go against his moral and spiritual convictions.

 

He further stated that the people of Benue have entrusted him with a renewed mandate to serve, and that this responsibility includes protecting lives, securing communities, and fostering development across all local government areas. He acknowledged ongoing appeals from citizens for improved access to clean water, healthcare services, and expanded educational opportunities, assuring them that these needs remain top priorities.

 

The Governor emphasized that achieving these goals requires unity, collective responsibility, and a shared commitment to peace and progress. He urged citizens to support government efforts through constructive engagement and community participation.

 

While commending the people of Benue for maintaining peace despite political tensions and provocations from opposition elements, Governor Alia encouraged them to temper justice with mercy, especially for those who show genuine repentance. Drawing from scripture, he referenced the parable of the prodigal son and reiterated the Christian call to forgive, stating that forgiveness remains a cornerstone of both spiritual and social harmony.

 

“As a priest,” he noted, “I am guided by the teaching to forgive ‘seventy times seven times.’ Those we forgive on earth shall also find forgiveness in heaven.”

 

Governor Alia concluded by reminding citizens that one of the most fundamental commandments of God is “Thou shalt not kill.” He urged everyone to uphold this principle, recognizing that every life is sacred and purposeful.

 

In these challenging times, he called for renewed faith, love, and unity, expressing hope that through collective effort and divine guidance, peace can be restored and sustained across the nation.
