The appointment of the former Super Eagles Captain Augustine Eguavoen, as Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation has expired. 

The former Super Eagles captain and coach  was  appointed as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on 21 October 2020.

Eguavoen’s appointment then was approved by the NFF’s executive committee meeting held virtually on Tuesday 20 October 2020.

He was appointed alongside Paul Aigbogun, former Flying Eagles coach, who was appointed as deputy director of technical and scouting for the federation, while Garba Lawal, ex-Super Eagles midfielder, was appointed the chief technical officer.

Eguavoen  work with Mr. Paul Aigbogun (Deputy Director, Technical & Scouting); Terry Babatunde Eguaoje (Consultant on Coaching & Development); Abdulrafiu Yusuf (Assistant Director, Coaching & Development); Siji Lagunju (Assistant Director, Training & Development) and; Garba Lawal (Chief Technical Officer).

During the tenure, Eguavoen also took charge of the Super Eagles to the 2022 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon where the Eagles were elimination at the second round by Tunisia. The Tsunami that followed the elimination of the country from the Qatar 2022 World Cup saw the exit  of other of his assistants.

Eguavoen's three years tenure many has argued has been docile and lack of visible impact. The question that Nigerians want resolved immediately, is if the contract of the former ACB defence strongman should be renewed by the NFF or not? 

According to the President of the African Coaches Connect Sunju-Abbey Eldred, Eguavoen's contract should be renewed, but he should approach it with new vigor. "his impact was not felt by Nigerians especially the Coaches. The NFF Should renew it, and he must make his impact felt by Nigerians".

To the President of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Dr Ladan Bosso, Eguavoen's appointment at the Federation should be renewed for another Tenure. " He deserves to have his appointment renewed for another Tenure. I am 100% in support of it. But, he should ensure prompt payment of coaches salaries and ensuring regular courses for coaches education and development". Bosso said with these things he will break new grounds. He affirmed that other things  he has already discussed with him.

Former International and U-17 & U - 20 Head Coach Manu Garba  thinks ,having  seen the way the nature of job is and  now  conversant with everything that he needs to aid in the development of football in Nigeria, his contract should be renewed.

" most importantly he should look towards the provision of infrastructures like playing fields , preparation for national teams.  I wish the NFF renew his contract as continuity in technical jobs is good for the development of football" .

Former Chairman of FCT Football Coaches Godwin Bamigboye also agreed that the NFF should renew the contract. According to Bamigboye, "since the NFF did not think twice in extending the contracts of the expatriates on their payroll, what would stop them from renewing that of an indigenous man." They should go ahead and renew it, there's nothing too big about it ".

Former Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Richard Jideaka is also of the opinion that renewing Eguavoen's contract is beautiful but he needs to rejig the Technical Department of the Federation" I think his contract should be renewed. I also think if he get the renewal. This is important because the Technical department of NFF needs some rejigging with the addition of young, dynamic and resourceful men and women to help the Technical Director.

He said Eguavoen has been an upgrade on the previous leaderships of the department.
