Director General NSC, Hon. Olopade Reassures NAWIS of Recognition in New NSC Act
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended the National Association for Women in Sports (NAWIS) for its outstanding contributions to Nigerian sports. Director General of the NSC, Hon. Oluwabukola Olopade, praised NAWIS during a courtesy visit by its leadership to his office.
Olopade granted NAWIS' request to be reinstated as a member of the Board of the Sports Commission, citing the value of NAWIS representation in all sports federations and the excellent performances of Nigerian female athletes. He also emphasized the importance of recognizing NAWIS' contributions, suggesting that the association deserves a national award yearly.
NAWIS President, Professor Mariam Suleiman, highlighted the association's achievements, including its membership in Africa Women in Sports (AWISA) and the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS). She emphasized the need for government, sporting authorities, and corporate Nigeria to support NAWIS' role in mentoring and caring for girls and women in sports.
The visit was also attended by notable figures, including the founder of NAWIS, Prof Emeritus Florence Bola Adeyanju, and Dr. Alhassan Yakmut, the former DG of the NSC.
