The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, commended NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau for launching the transformational NFF-FIFA Players’ Hostel and new training pitches at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The initiative is expected to not only revolutionize Nigerian football infrastructure but also boost the nation’s economy.

 

During Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony, Speaker Abbas expressed strong support for the project. “This is a noble project, and the National Assembly will give it full backing. I congratulate the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, and I thank FIFA for agreeing to fund this initiative,” he said while cutting the ceremonial tape.

 

Leading the FIFA delegation, Gelson Fernandes reiterated FIFA’s commitment under the FIFA Forward 3.0 programme, emphasizing that infrastructural development remains a priority since President Gianni Infantino’s tenure began.

 

NFF President Gusau shared his excitement about the project, stating, “From the day my Executive Committee and I were sworn in on 30th September 2022, I was determined to push this project forward as a legacy for Nigerian football. By building a players’ hostel and new training pitches, we not only enhance team management but also reduce costs, allowing us to reinvest in grassroots development.”

 

The project will serve all Nigerian national teams, leagues, and academies and includes:

• Two new training pitches (one synthetic and one natural grass) and the reconstruction of the existing synthetic pitch.

• Spectator seating terraces with 1,838 seats.

• Two dressing rooms for players, each accommodating 27 players.

• Two dressing rooms for officials.

 

The groundbreaking event was attended by numerous local and international dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and stakeholders, all of whom applauded the leadership, determination, and commitment to advancing football development in Nigeria. Construction is expected to take 24 months, fully funded by FIFA.
