Di flogging happen for one public park for Banda Aceh on Wednesday, as part of Sharia law enforcement wey dem dey do for di area. Apart from di couple, three oda people still chop cane for di same event – one for gambling, two for drink alcohol.

 

Dem divide di flogging into 10-10 strokes, using rattan cane, and medical workers stand-by incase person faint or get serious injury. Di woman get flog by female Sharia officer, while di man na masked floggers handle am.

 

Mayor of Banda Aceh, Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal, talk say di flogging na to correct bad behaviour and to teach moral lesson. “Dis flogging na for those wey do adultery, drink alcohol and play online gambling,” she yarn. “E go help dem repent and serve as warning to others.”

 

Small crowd gather watch as di cane dey land for di couple back. Some eyewitness talk say di couple face twist with pain as each lash land.

 

But human rights group no happy. Dem call am wicked, say e dey shameful and dey against human rights law. Dem even beg Indonesian government make dem stop dis kind punishment, especially as e dey affect women and vulnerable pipol pass.

 

Still, for Aceh, public flogging still normal, and many locals believe say e dey help maintain religious order. Aceh start to use Sharia law since 2001, afta government give dem special power to calm down long-time fighting for di region. Di law dey run with Indonesia national law, but na only Aceh dey do dis kind public punishment.

 

Even though Indonesia pass new criminal law for 2022 wey talk say sex outside marriage go soon become crime for di whole country, dat one no go start until 2026. But for Aceh, Sharia law dey active already.

 

Earlier dis year, two men bin also collect over 150 strokes for Aceh because dem catch dem with same-sex relationship, wey Sharia law for dat area still see as crime.
