Luka Istifanus, the Director of Sports for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Council, has expressed confidence that Team FCT can finish among the top seven at the upcoming National Sports Festival in Ogun State. Speaking on the sidelines of the recently concluded National Council of Sports conference in Enugu, Istifanus emphasized the potential of Team FCT to compete with top sporting states such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, and Lagos if the right support and environment are provided.

"There is nothing extraordinary about what those aforementioned states are doing. Some of our athletes have been poached by them. Imagine if all the athletes in FCT could represent Team FCT, combined with proper preparation and timely remuneration. The sky would be our limit," Istifanus stated.

He highlighted the need for adequate planning and support in the lead-up to the festival. "We are just a few months away from the games, and we still don't have a clear plan. Other states are already preparing. We need to do more, and I am hopeful that the government will recognize the importance of ensuring that our youth are properly included in the development agenda, with sports being a major tool to achieve that," he said.

Istifanus underscored the potential of FCT athletes and the importance of providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities. "Our athletes have the talent and determination to succeed. What we need is a conducive environment that supports their growth and development. This includes proper training facilities, adequate funding, and timely incentives. With these in place, Team FCT can not only compete but excel at the National Sports Festival," he added.

The director also called for a collective effort from all stakeholders to ensure the success of Team FCT. "It requires a concerted effort from everyone involved—government officials, sports administrators, coaches, and the athletes themselves. We need to come together and work towards a common goal, which is to see FCT excel in the national sports arena," Istifanus urged.

He expressed optimism about the future of sports in the FCT, provided that the necessary steps are taken to support the athletes. "The potential is there, and with the right support, we can achieve great things. It's about time we harnessed the talent within FCT and provided our athletes with the platform to showcase their skills on a national level," he concluded.

Istifanus's comments highlight the critical need for strategic planning and investment in sports within the FCT. By addressing these needs, Team FCT can look forward to a successful outing at the National Sports Festival and beyond.
