Nigerian ex-international footballer, Etim John Esin, often referred to as the “African Maradona,” recently reflected on memorable moments in his career, including his decision to sign with Iwuayanwu Nationale of Owerri over Abiola Babes of Abeokuta, as reported by Sports247.ng.

During his career, Iwuayanwu Nationale, Abiola Babes, and Leventis United were top teams in Nigerian football, but Etim recalled how his choice was influenced by Chief Emmanuel Iwuayanwu’s personal gesture. Chief Iwuayanwu gifted him a Peugeot 505, a rare luxury at the time, while Chief M.K.O. Abiola was often unavailable to negotiate directly. “I could have signed for Abiola Babes,” Esin admitted, “but every time I met Chief Abiola, he was always traveling. Meanwhile, Iwuayanwu gave me a car.”

Etim also opened up about the challenges he faced with discipline throughout his career, admitting it was a major personal struggle. Reflecting on the shooting incident in 1987, where he was injured while driving the gifted Peugeot in Lagos, he recognized the role that his own behavior played. “One of my pitfalls was indiscipline,” he confessed. “You think you can get away with everything, but, at the end of the day, you’re just deceiving yourself. Discipline and humility are essential.”

Esin went on to share how his father initially opposed his football career, preferring he pursue academics like prominent players Adokie Amasiamaka and Segun Odegbami. However, the shooting incident proved to be a turning point. While Esin was hospitalized, his father witnessed the outpouring of media attention and public support for his son’s recovery. “It was then that he finally accepted my choice and blessed my career,” Esin said, recalling the moment his father understood his passion and commitment to the sport.
