The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has reemphasized its quest in ensuring that Women thrive in the Field of Engineering by breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes and providing the support and resources needed for success through mentorship programs, scholarships, workshops and advocacy.

APWEN National President, Engr. Dr. Adebisi Osim made the remarks on Friday, 19th July 2024 at the University Auditorium of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka during the STEM FOR ALL programme hosted by the Association's South-East Zone with the theme, "Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity in Engineering for a Sustainable World.”

Engr. Osim informed that the "STEM for All" program is designed to inspire, educate and empower students and professionals alike, fostering a culture of inclusivity and excellence in Engineering. She affirmed that Engineering is the cornerstone of innovation and development which drives the solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges.

Osim said: "The STEM for All programme has been launched in three states (in three geopolitical zones) across the country, I am glad to bring it to the South-East Zone. This programme was born out of my passionate drive towards advancing the Engineering profession with the young ones, especially those in secondary schools and tertiary institutions. 

"Today's theme, "Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity in Engineering for a Sustainable World," is not just a topic of discussion but a clarion call to action. We are reminded of the profound impact that engineering has on shaping our world and the imperative to ensure that this field is open and accessible to all, regardless of gender, background, or circumstances.

"Engineering is the cornerstone of innovation and development which drives the solutions to some of our most pressing global challenges, from climate change to infrastructure development and beyond. Yet, for engineering to truly serve society and address these challenges effectively, it must reflect the diverse perspectives and talents of the communities it aims to benefit," She said.

In his remarks while declaring the event open, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu stated that science and technology are the driving engines of every economic development. Prof. Ikechebelu who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UNIZIK, Prof. Solomon Nwigbo averred that science, technology, engineering and mathematics play a crucial role in all spheres of human endeavour.

The scholar also stated that STEM have had a significant effect in social dynamics in developed and advanced economics resulting in the advent of artificial intelligence. He called on the students especially the female gender to embrace Engineering as a diiscipline for all and take advantage of the opportunity provided by STEM to enhance their knowledge base and skills.

"Science and Technology are the driving engines of any economic development, as Science and technology are languages, just as English language, any country that seeks to achieve greatness embraces STEM as the way forward and the new normal. Unfortunately, Nigeria is not doing well in that area which is the reason the western world is ahead of us,” He said.

The one-day workshop also featured panel discussions by a set of renown female Engineers and scholars in the South East zone narrating their experiences in the field, ways which young female students can thrive in Engineering, challenges and prospects for the future.

The event also featured a science competition on creation of balloon car where Community High School Akwaeze came out tops beating St. Patrick's College Awka and Nnamdi Azikiwe University High School Awka who came second and third respectively in the challenge which featured other schools such as Rev. Fr. Aaron Ekwueme Memorial Secondary School Amawbia, St. Lawrence Splendid Secondary School Mbaukwu and Blossom Fount College Iyiagu, Awka.

In her vote of thanks, the South East Zonal Coordinator of the Association, Engr. Linda Nnodi thanked all and sundry who came to witness the occasion and made it worth while, she thanked UNIZIK for providing the platform for the successful programme while promising that APWEN will continue to initiate programmes geared towards promotion of the Engineering profession and education at large.

Other highlight of the occasion was presentation of the Water Treatment Project executed by female Engineering undergraduate students led by their group leader and Chairperson APWEN Student leader, UNIZIK Chapter, Chidimma Cynthia Onyekwelu. There were speeches made by Role Models, awards and certificates presentations.
