President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly considering several prominent northern Christian figures as potential running mates ahead of the 2027 presidential election, according to political insiders familiar with ongoing consultations within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Media reports have identified four leading contenders: former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara; Minister of Defence, Lt.-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd); Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah.

Sources say the deliberations are part of a broader strategy by Tinubu’s political team to address concerns about religious and regional balance on the presidential ticket. All the names reportedly under consideration are northern Christians from predominantly Christian states, a factor analysts say is central to the ongoing calculations.

Political observers note that under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, a presidential candidate is permitted to choose a running mate from any region of the country, giving the APC wide latitude in its decision-making process.

The renewed speculation follows sustained criticism of the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the APC during the 2023 general elections, a choice that generated intense debate and attracted both domestic and international scrutiny.

Online reactions to the reports have been mixed. While some Nigerians have expressed support for Christopher Musa, citing his security background and leadership experience, others have questioned the emphasis on religious identity, arguing that competence, performance, and national vision should take priority.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the discussions underscore the complex political, religious, and regional considerations facing APC strategists as they work to build a ticket capable of broad national appeal.
