President Bola Tinubu has praised the Super Eagles for their efforts in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers despite their heartbreaking defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, urging the team to quickly put the setback behind them and focus on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

 

Nigeria’s World Cup dream came to an end at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the Eagles were eliminated in a dramatic playoff encounter. After a tense 1–1 draw over 120 minutes, the match proceeded to penalties, with DR Congo edging Nigeria 4–3 to advance to the Inter-Confederation playoff and keep their World Cup hopes alive.

 

In a statement on Monday, President Tinubu acknowledged the pain shared by millions of Nigerians over the country’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the global showpiece. However, he emphasized that the team deserved commendation for their determination, especially after securing victory in the first leg of the playoff.

 

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” the President said.

 

Tinubu also stressed the need for a thorough review of Nigeria’s football systems, calling on administrators, players, and stakeholders to address lingering weaknesses that have hindered the nation’s football progress.

 

“We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board,” he noted.

 

Looking ahead, the President urged the Super Eagles to redirect their energy toward the 2025–2026 AFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.

 

“Now is the time to focus all efforts on the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must recover the lost glory,” Tinubu added.

 

The team’s World Cup exit has sparked conversations across the country, with many calling for reforms and renewed commitment as Nigeria prepares for continental action.
