Popular Nigerian comedian and TV host, Teju Babyface, has opened up about a difficult period in his life when he deeply regretted relocating to the United States with his family.

 

In a candid revelation shared on a new episode of his YouTube channel, Teju admitted that he battled what he described as the “grass is greener” syndrome — the belief that life is automatically better abroad — only to discover that every side has its own struggles.

 

“The issue with life is that we almost suffer from the ‘grass is greener on the other side’ syndrome,” he said. “When we’re standing in one position and looking at another place, that place looks very rosy, very appealing — and we want to be there. But we don’t see the challenges that come with it.”

 

Teju explained that he was certain relocating was the right move for his career and family at the time, but reality struck soon after their arrival in the U.S., especially with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

“When we were leaving Nigeria, I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that it was the necessary next step in my career evolution,” he said. “But when we got here and the challenges started, especially when COVID began, I was convinced I had made the biggest mistake of my life.”

 

The comedian described the early years in the U.S. as extremely challenging, saying the pandemic amplified his sense of regret and uncertainty.

 

“America has its own unique challenges that you will go through — tough challenges. Then when you add COVID on top of that, ah! For about three years, I was convinced that I had made the biggest mistake of my life. That I had shot myself in the foot,” he revealed.

 

Teju added that his struggles abroad gave him a new understanding of a classic lyric from Juju music legend, King Sunny Ade — a line he had sung for years without truly grasping its depth.

 

“I was convinced that I had taken a ruinous risk — the kind of risk that leads to ruin,” he confessed. “Because I was completely lost and had no idea where my life was going. For the first time, I understood what King Sunny Ade meant when he sang. I’d been singing it all my life, but only then did I truly get his sentiment.”

 

Despite the challenges, Teju Babyface has continued to grow his platform, using his YouTube channel to share inspiring reflections on life, purpose, and personal growth — lessons drawn from both his successes and his struggles abroad.
