The National Sports Commission (NSC) has poured glowing praise on Nigeria’s Super Falcons after their breathtaking comeback victory over host nation Morocco to lift the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy on Saturday night.

The Falcons, who overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3–2 at a packed Olympic Stadium in Rabat, became the first African team ever to win the continental title 10 times, cementing their status as the undisputed queens of African football.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko described the performance as “nothing short of legendary,” applauding the players for demonstrating the resilience and spirit that define Nigeria.

“What we witnessed tonight is nothing short of legendary,” Dikko said. “The Super Falcons showed the heart of true champions by rising from adversity, silencing the crowd, and etching their names into the annals of African football history. On behalf of the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is proud of this team and the Nigerian sports family, we say congratulations and thank you for making the nation proud.”

Also commending the team’s monumental achievement, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade urged the Falcons to aim even higher in future campaigns.

“This is the Nigeria we know – resilient, relentless, and unstoppable. To bounce back from two goals down against the host nation in a final is a mark of extraordinary character. Mission X is complete. The journey continues, and we will be with you every step of the way.”

Both Dikko and Olopade were present at the Olympic Stadium, joining thousands of Nigerian fans in cheering the team on as they fought back against a passionate Moroccan home crowd.

The final started disastrously for Nigeria, with Morocco racing to a 2–0 lead through Ghizzlane Chebbak (12’) and Sanna Mssoudy (24’). But the Super Falcons, renowned for their grit, roared back into the contest after halftime.

Esther Okoronkwo ignited the turnaround with a coolly taken penalty in the 64th minute, before providing a precise assist for Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer in the 71st.

The defining moment came in the 88th minute, when substitute Jennifer Echegini curled in the winner from a sublime Okoronkwo freekick, sparking wild celebrations on the pitch and across Nigeria.

With this victory, the Super Falcons not only secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title but also reaffirmed their dominance in African women’s football.
