Sinach Faces N5b Lawsuit Over hit song “Way Maker”

Nigeria gospel singer, Osinachi Kalu Okoro who is popularly known as Sinach has been sued to court with a N5 billion lawsuit over her hit song "Way Maker" by Michael Oluwole.
Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, who is a music producer claims that he's the co-owner and author of the song, and is demanding N5 billion in damages for copyright infringement.¹

According to Maye, he was heavily involved in the production of "Way Maker", serving as the studio engineer who recorded, mixed, and mastered the song. He also claims to have created essential instrumental elements, including piano, strings, and synthesizers, without a formal transfer of his performer's rights.

However, Sinach denies Maye's claims, stating that she's the sole author of the song. Her lawyer, Emeka Etiaba, argues that Sinach wrote, arranged, and performed the song before Maye's involvement, and that Maye was only hired to mix and master the final recording for $300.²

The trial, which began on November 27, 2024, has been adjourned until January 29 and 30, 2025. We'll have to wait and see how this case unfolds.
