SPECTATOR*  *Letter To Newly Elected Area Councils Chairmen In FCT

By Godwin Bamigboye.

 *Dear Honourable Chairmen,*
 *FCT Area Councils.*

I am delighted to express my congratulatory message to you on your election as Chairmen into the Six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). I congratulate also all the elected Councillors. I wish you all success in your endeavours.

It is with utmost sense of responsibility that I approach you this day, not only as Spectator the columnist but as National Coordinator of the Nigerian Grassroots Sports Forum (NGSF), a private initiative committed to grassroot sports development. I believe that you are aware of the privilege of occupying a very important leadership position of Chairman in the Third tier of Government , which is the Local Government and in the FCT, Area Councils. It is needless going into the details of the  importance of this tier of Government. Suffice to say that the people and government meet at this level. Let me now go to the main reason or reasons for this letter.

I want to request that under your leadership, your administration should record unprecedented infrastructural, economic, agricultural and social progress for the benefit of the residents of your Area Councils. Let me narrow it down. I have heard the pronouncement of the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Ahmed Bola Tinubu GCFR about the autonomy of Local Governments in Nigeria. Whether it will be or not, I am aware that the FCT Area Councils are enjoying close to full autonomy. Can I then conclude here that the FCT Area Councils have no reason to complain about lack of funds? I think so. They are much more freer than Local Governments in the States of Nigeria who are yet to be independent of the commanding influence of State Governors.
I therefore call on Honourable Christopher Zakka Maikalangu of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC),  Honourable Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of Abaji Area Council, Honourable Joshua  Ishaku of Bwari Area Council, Honourable Mohammed  Kasim of Gwagwalada Area Council, Honourable Danjuma Shekwolo of Kuje Area Council and Honourable Nuhu Daniel of Kwali Area Council to intentionally resolve and deliberately execute or implement projects that will promote, develop and provide economic prosperity that will alleviate the sufferings of residents of FCT.
Let me be specific on sports:-

1.  There are Six (6) uncompleted Stadiums or Stadia in the Six Area Councils. Though they are not the Area Councils projects, you can remind the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON to give these projects attention. The Minister promised to complete the projects but how soon is a matter of concern. Let it be your concern.

2.  Area Councils Sports projects. Apart from AMAC proposed Stadium at Apo, I cannot confidently say any of the Area Councils have any sports project. If there is any, I will like to know but to the best of my limited knowledge, I don't think there is any Area Council initiated and executed sports project. Sad to say and sad to hear too.

3.  Provide sports facilities, provide affordable mini stadiums and you will see your Area Council contributing immensely to the Nigerian Sports Economy.

I shall follow up with letters of reminder. Meanwhile,
