Purchase Of N150m Presidential Jet Is Fiscal Irresponsibility... Oby Ezekwesili
Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has described the purchase of a N150m Presidential Jet as egregious fiscal irresponsibility amid the country's financial woes facing the country.
Her remarks come in the wake of the recent acquisition of a presidential jet costing N150 million for President Tinubu's use.
In a pointed post on X, Ezekwesili denounced the current administration and legislative body for their apparent disregard for the nation's severe debt crisis.
“What a big shame on the @NigeriaGov of @NGRPresident @officialABAT and the lawmakers @nassnigeria! The worst display of fiscal rascality is when political and public leaders of a country that is highly overburdened with debts of all kinds, choose to spend scarce public resources on prestige projects and luxuries,” Ezekwesili wrote.
She criticized the ostentatious spending by Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the National Assembly, and governors of the 36 states, whom she accused of indulging in extravagant comforts while urging the impoverished population to “sacrifice for the future.”
Ezekwesili warned that such practices are unsustainable and risk provoking further public unrest.
Ezekwesili also linked the current dissatisfaction among citizens to historical grievances about government spending.
She recalled a similar uproar from August 19, 2013, following her keynote speech on the cost of governance at a CISLAC conference.
