Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed he will contest the 2027 presidential election, declaring his commitment to serve only one term if elected.

 

Speaking during a Twitter Space hosted by Parallel Facts on Sunday, Obi emphasized his belief in zoning and power rotation, describing his one-term pledge as a principled stance rooted in equity and fairness.

 

“If that arrangement [zoning] is to be followed strictly, you would see that anybody, not just me, who happens to come from the South as president in 2027 must be ready to leave on the 28th of May, 2031 — not even the 29th,” Obi stated.

 

He reiterated his longstanding advocacy for zoning, referencing his political history in Anambra State, where he championed power rotation. Obi noted that his adherence to zoning principles has drawn political resistance, but he remains firm in his commitment to fairness.

 

“I campaigned for zoning. I championed zoning in Anambra State. I insisted on it, maintained it, and followed it to the last letter. Till today, I still follow it religiously,” he said.

 

The former Anambra State governor also promised to uphold democratic values, vowing to strengthen opposition politics and address the frequent cross-party defections that have undermined Nigeria’s political stability.

 

“We must build a strong opposition. We must end the culture of political nomadism where elected officials jump from one party to another without consequence,” Obi declared.

 

Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, remains a prominent voice in Nigeria’s political landscape. His confirmation of a 2027 run is expected to reshape early political alignments, particularly among youth voters and reform-oriented blocs.

 

Political observers say his one-term pledge could resonate with voters seeking leadership committed to institutional reform over personal ambition.
