Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has described peace as the ultimate measure of effective leadership, saying it should never be mistaken for weakness.

 

Jonathan made the statement while speaking at a public forum on governance and national unity, where he reflected on leadership challenges in Africa and beyond. According to the former president, true leaders are defined not by their ability to dominate or intimidate, but by their commitment to dialogue, inclusion, and stability.

 

“Peace is not a sign of weakness; it is the highest form of leadership,” Jonathan said, drawing applause from participants. He emphasized that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of conflict, noting that societies progress faster when leaders prioritize reconciliation and mutual understanding.

 

He urged political leaders to place national interest above personal ambition, warning that inflammatory rhetoric and intolerance often deepen divisions and undermine democratic institutions. Jonathan also called on young people to embrace peaceful engagement as a tool for social change.

 

The former president, who has been widely recognized for conceding defeat in Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, reiterated that leadership rooted in peace leaves a lasting legacy. He added that nations which invest in peace are better positioned to achieve economic growth, security, and social cohesion.
