D’Tigress of Nigeria head coach Rena Wakama has been named thebest coach in the basketball event of the 2024 Olympics.

Wakama tutored the Nigeria basketball team  to finished at the quarter-final stage of Parish 2024 Olympics. This first by any African team in the game.

Under her tutelage, the D’Tigress to ran over  World No 3 Australia and No 5 Canada at the group stage. The Tigress narrowly lost to champions, USA at the quarter final stage.

Rena Wakama who was born on  11 April 1992 was a player of the team,  before assuming the position of a head coach .

 She was an assistant coach at Tulane University.

As a player,  she played for the Western Carolina Catamounts for four years. Immediately she left college, she joined the D'Tigress where she played for the team at the 2015 Women's Afrobasket tournament in Cameroon where Nigeria finished third. She also represented Nigeria's First Bank at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women during her career as a player.

In 2023, she became the first female Head Coach of D’Tigress and became the first Nigerian National Female Basketball Team coach to win the competition since it began in 1966.
