By Tolulope Oguntimehin
The historic city of Ibadan, known for its rich culture, is set to make a mark on the global road race scene with the Grand Ibadan Marathon, scheduled for November 2nd, 2024. Celebrated Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, once described Ibadan as the "land with golden roofs," highlighting its deep heritage and significant role in Nigerian history.
This major event, organized by the Oyo State government in partnership with Savvy Events, aims to showcase Ibadan's appeal as a center for sports, tourism, and commerce. Following a sweeping victory in the local government elections, Governor Seyi Makinde views the marathon as an opportunity to highlight the city’s achievements and allure. Despite its historical significance, including hosting West Africa’s first TV station and Nigeria’s first newspaper and radio station, Ibadan is determined to demonstrate its capacity to host world-class events.
The Ibadan Marathon is more than just a race; it's a celebration of community spirit, health, and social impact. The theme, Ere Idaraya (meaning "sports" in Yoruba), captures the inclusive and unifying spirit of the event, inviting people of all fitness levels to join in.
Whether you're a seasoned marathoner, a casual jogger, or a fitness enthusiast, this event is open to everyone. The race route takes participants through the city's historic and cultural landmarks, allowing runners to experience the rich heritage of Ibadan with every step.
Governor Makinde sees the marathon as a powerful tool for promoting socio-economic development, engaging youth, and advancing Oyo State's tourism agenda. With Savvy Events, known for their exceptional organizational standards, the Ibadan Marathon aims to set a new benchmark for marathons in Nigeria and beyond.
The event will feature various race categories, including the challenging full marathon (42.195km) and a fun 10K run, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy. This marathon embodies Oyo State's forward-thinking leadership and commitment to showcasing Ibadan's unique charm.
