Nollywood actor Gideon Okeke has raised concerns over what he described as an uneven level of support and promotion within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

 

In a recent post on his social media page, Okeke highlighted the stark contrast between how Afrobeat musicians are celebrated compared to actors, filmmakers, and producers in Nollywood.

 

He noted that Nigerian musicians are widely celebrated, idolised, and promoted both locally and internationally. Meanwhile, Nollywood creatives, despite their growing influence and contribution to the country’s cultural exports, rarely receive similar recognition or backing from their peers in the entertainment industry.

 

Okeke pointed out that music stars in Nigeria often proudly embrace titles such as “big 3” and “big 5,” reflecting their dominance and influence. However, he lamented that very few of these artists extend the same level of support to Nollywood by recommending films or hyping actors and producers.

 

He further compared the situation to global practices, citing examples of international figures—like former US President Barack Obama—who openly promote music they enjoy. Okeke suggested that if Nigerian music stars adopted a similar approach toward Nollywood, the film industry could benefit from stronger public endorsement and wider appreciation.

 

The actor’s comments have sparked conversations online about the need for greater unity and mutual support among Nigerian creatives across different entertainment sectors.
