Former Super Eagles captain and football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has reflected on how his formative years in Germany shaped both his career and character, describing his time there as the foundation of his professional success.

 

Speaking on The Exchange Podcast hosted by Femi Soneye, Okocha recalled moving to Germany at just 17 years old, a transition he says transformed him from “a boy into a man.”

 

“Germany was my first stop, and I went there when I was just 17,” Okocha said. “I always say I went to Germany as a boy and left as a man. The discipline and professionalism they taught me — I didn’t see it anywhere else.”

 

Born in Enugu in 1973, Okocha began his football journey in Nigeria before moving to Germany in 1990 to join Borussia Neunkirchen, a third-division side. His dazzling performances earned him a move to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992, where he quickly became a fan favourite.

 

His unforgettable solo goal against Karlsruhe SC in 1993 — when he dribbled past Oliver Kahn and several defenders before scoring — remains one of the most iconic goals in Bundesliga history and was voted Germany’s Goal of the Year.

 

Okocha went on to have a glittering career with Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers, where he served as captain and became one of the Premier League’s most adored players.

 

Reflecting on Germany’s lasting influence, Okocha said the country instilled in him discipline, punctuality, and resilience, traits that defined his playing days and life beyond football. Despite early challenges such as language barriers and homesickness, he credited those struggles with building his strength and character.

 

Now celebrated as one of Africa’s most skillful and entertaining footballers, Okocha’s story is a testament to how early discipline and adversity can forge excellence. From his Bundesliga beginnings to his achievements with the Super Eagles, including Olympic gold in 1996, his journey remains an inspiring lesson in dedication and growth.
