NPFL MD25: Teenage Sensation Samuel Matthew Seals Victory for Sunshine Stars Against Akwa United
A lone goal from Sunshine Stars’ Under-19 prospect, Samuel Matthew, secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Akwa United in their NPFL Matchday 25 clash at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.
The tightly contested encounter saw both sides showcase impressive football skills, much to the delight of the spectators. Sunshine Stars missed several chances before finally breaking the deadlock in the 29th minute when Matthew converted a well-placed square pass from Waheed Adebayo.
The young forward now boasts two goals in as many home matches for the Owena Whales.
Midfielder Michael Olalusi, making his return after more than a year on the sidelines, played a vital role in stabilizing Sunshine Stars’ midfield and shielding the defense.
Despite a spirited fight from Akwa United, led by former Sunshine Stars coach Kennedy Boboye, the visitors struggled to break through the well-organized Sunshine backline. The relegation-threatened sides battled intensely, but the hosts held on to their slim advantage.
Speaking after the match, Sunshine Stars head coach Bobola Akinfolarin praised his players for executing the game plan effectively, stating that the victory would restore confidence in the team.
“This win means a lot. It will boost the players’ morale and instill a winning mentality,” Akinfolarin said. “We worked on our defensive lapses, and it paid off today with a clean sheet and maximum points. We’ll keep improving.”
With this hard-fought victory, Sunshine Stars take a crucial step forward in their fight to climb up the NPFL standings.
