NNL Clubs Shock NPFL Teams In President Federation Cup Round Of 16; 'Most Important League' In Nigeria Dominate Q/Finals Fixtures

It has been a subject debate lately why the second tier league regards itself as the 'most important' in the country.
But the 2024 President Federation Cup Round Of 16 games served as veritable opportunity for the hitherto unheralded second tier league clubs to make their voice heard and their claim 'confirmed'.
In the eight (8) Round of 16 games decided at different venues across the country, NNL clubs prevailed in five (5), with the Sokoto United 1-0 triumph over Enyimba as the major talking point.
And as if that was not enough painful blow to the ego and status of the NPFL clubs, Kebbi Utd, another NNL side brushed aside Akwa United 1-0 just as Elkanemi Warriors dimmed Shooting Stars with similar 1-0 humiliation to seal their place in the last eight (8).
Wednesday's results ensures that for the first time, NNL will field as many as five teams in the quarter finals (Round of eight (8)), with a potentential guarantee of two NNL clubs reaching the semi finals.
