President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), has paid glowing tribute to former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa following the forward’s official retirement from international football.

 

Gusau described Musa as a towering figure in Nigerian football whose influence went beyond his performances on the pitch.

 

“Ahmed Musa was a rock for Nigeria, both on the pitch and in the dressing room,” Gusau said. “He was a charismatic leader and an amazing patriot who gave his all at all times whenever he was called upon.

 

“The Nigeria Football Federation joins other individuals and entities within Nigeria and globally to celebrate a man whose simplicity and humility, aside from his commitment and zeal to win for Nigeria, remain virtues that should be embraced by upcoming and even established players of our time.”

 

Musa, Nigeria’s record FIFA World Cup goalscorer with four goals across two tournaments — Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018 — formally announced his international retirement months after his appointment as General Manager of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Kano Pillars.

 

One of the most accomplished players in Super Eagles history, Musa was a key member of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He also helped Nigeria secure a bronze medal at the 2019 AFCON and a silver medal at the 2023 edition.

 

Over the course of his international career, Musa represented Nigeria at U20, U23, and senior levels, eventually becoming the country’s most-capped senior international with 111 appearances.

 

Widely admired for his leadership, professionalism, and longevity, Musa’s retirement marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, with many stakeholders viewing his career as a benchmark for dedication, patriotism, and service to the national cause.
