NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, despite a rocky start in the qualifiers, with only three points from four matches. Gusau highlighted the growing momentum of the Super Eagles, asserting that the young players are aware of the stakes and are committed to improving their performance.

“We have started our qualifiers for the next AFCON in Morocco in 2025, and I believe this will be our breakthrough in winning the tournament,” Gusau stated, emphasizing the importance of supporting the team moving forward.

The NFF is also focusing on finding a suitable coach for the Super Falcons. Gusau mentioned plans to utilize the FIFA window in October to engage the team and assess young talents from the league. The current coach will invite local players to camp, alongside some experienced players, to blend youth and experience in preparation for upcoming competitions.

On the coaching situation for the Super Eagles, Gusau acknowledged the complexities of negotiations, particularly with agents who often introduce unexpected terms. He reassured fans that the process is nearing completion, promising a coach who can elevate the team’s performance.

Additionally, he confirmed the appointment of a new coach for the U-20 team, following a thorough evaluation by the technical committee. The decision to bring in Aliyu Zubairu from El-Kanemi Warriors, a second-tier league coach who recently secured promotion and won the Presidential Federation Cup, has been met with general approval.

“We believe in giving opportunities based on merit, and we are committed to supporting our teams as they strive for success,” Gusau concluded.
