Barely a year ago, Gideon Okechukwu and Fortune Ghankon were plying their trade in grassroots football for
Young Ajax football Academy Kurmin Mashi, Kaduna
and Kakuri Academy in Kaduna. Fast forward, the talented pair have embarked on a meteoric rise, moving to Yoca Crocodile—owned by the late House of Representatives member Ekene Abubakar—before landing at former Premier League side Gombe United.

Under the keen eye of experienced tactician Bala Nikyu, known for spotting raw talent, the duo has seamlessly transitioned to the rigors of the National League. Both players have impressed with their exceptional skills and maturity beyond their years, becoming vital squad members and pushing their teammates in every training session.

Although neither has found the back of the net yet as the league enters Matchday 7, their hunger and determination remain unshaken. Fortune, who has featured in every game this season, is grateful for the opportunity and committed to continuous improvement.

"This is huge for me. In just one year, I’ve gone from Kakuri Academy to playing for a former Premier League team. I’ve played all the matches so far, Scoring regularly is my ultimate goal, and even though I’m yet to score, I’ll keep stepping up my game. At Yoca Crocodile, I was a consistent scorer, but the level of competition here is higher. I’m ready to rise to the challenge," Fortune  said.

Gideon, who has been making substitute appearances, shares a similar determination as he works toward cementing a starting spot and breaking his goal drought.

"I’m doing everything I can to earn a regular starting position. and I’m getting better with each one. But I know I can do more, so I’ll keep working hard to be a constant headache for the coach when it comes to team selection" Fortune said.

As Gombe United continues its push in the National League, the young duo embodies the promise of a bright future, fueled by ambition, resilience, and a desire to leave their mark on Nigerian football.
