"Naira Over Dollars: SACFEA's Proposal for Port Agencies"
The Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) is pushing for a significant change in how port agencies operate in Nigeria.
SACFEA's president, Mrs. Boma Alabi, is calling on the Federal Government to require its agencies at the ports to charge in Naira instead of dollars. This move aims to de-dollarize the economy, a goal that's been gaining traction.
Alabi points out that shipping companies used to charge freight in Naira, but now it's all done in dollars. To put this into perspective, exporting a 20ft container from Nigeria costs around $1,000, while importing a 40ft container can range from $7,000 to $8,000. By switching to Naira, the government can reduce pressure on the foreign exchange market and promote economic stability.
SACFEA also emphasizes the need to streamline export processing at Nigerian ports. Delays during examination have led some exporters to route their goods through neighboring countries, resulting in losses for Nigerian ports. Fast-tracking port operations would not only increase efficiency but also support the nation's economic interests.
These changes are aligned with the Federal Government's Economic Stabilisation Bill, which proposes that agencies like NIMASA and NPA collect charges in Naira. By implementing these reforms, Nigeria can take a significant step towards economic growth and stability.
