The Senate has screened the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, behind closed doors. The screening, which took place on Wednesday, was a crucial step in confirming Oluyede's appointment as COAS.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua, commended the late Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, for his significant contributions to the Nigerian Army. Yar'adua highlighted Lagbaja's innovations, including the establishment of the Nigerian Army Aviation, and his efforts to improve the welfare of army personnel.

Yar'adua also acknowledged the bravery and sacrifices of the Nigerian Army and the armed forces in general, who have been working tirelessly to combat insurgency and other security challenges in the country.

The senator emphasized that the screening of Oluyede was aimed at assessing his professional skills, experiences, and expertise, particularly in defending Nigeria from external aggression and maintaining its territorial integrity.

Oluyede's ability to offer proposals for finding solutions to military funding and personnel welfare will be of great interest to the country, Yar'adua noted.
