The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into a viral video showing students engaging in smoking and drinking alcohol within what appears to be a school hostel. The students are suspected to be from Excel College, Ejigbo, according to a statement issued by Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education.

 

Describing the footage as “disturbing” and contrary to the values upheld by the state’s education system, the commissioner confirmed that the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has dispatched a monitoring team to:

• Verify the authenticity of the video

• Identify the students involved

• Assess the level of supervision and compliance with school regulations

 

“The behaviour captured in the footage runs contrary to the values and standards expected in the state’s education system,” Alli-Balogun said.

 

He added that preliminary discussions have already begun with the school’s management, and that disciplinary measures will be applied to any institution found culpable in accordance with state education regulations.

The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and morally sound learning environment for all students in Lagos.

 

“The safety, well-being, and moral values of all students remain paramount to the Lagos State Government,” he stated. “We are committed to ensuring that all learning environments are safe, disciplined, and conducive to the academic and moral growth of every learner.”

 

The viral incident has sparked public concern, with many parents and educators calling for stricter enforcement of school supervision policies and a renewed focus on student guidance and counselling.

 

Further updates are expected as the OEQA team concludes its findings and the Ministry determines the next course of action.
