Former Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign spokesperson and Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has said that no single individual, regardless of popularity, can defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections without a strong coalition.

Speaking on Channels Television on Sunday, April 27, Okonkwo emphasized the critical need for unity among opposition forces if they intend to challenge President Tinubu’s hold on power.

Quoting Nelson Mandela, he said, “It always appears impossible until it happens,” and noted that while he could not guarantee a specific alliance—such as between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar—he was confident that a coalition would emerge ahead of 2027.

“Whether it would be between Peter Obi and Atiku, I don’t know. But there would be a coalition. Why? Because that would be the only choice the opposition has to make an impact,” Okonkwo explained.

When asked directly if Tinubu could be defeated without a coalition, Okonkwo answered affirmatively, saying, “No one single candidate can beat Tinubu alone… and the reason is this: In Nigeria, we have entered into the unfortunate situation that you would not only win, but you have to secure your victory. So, you need the elite to secure your victory even if the people vote for you.”

He added that just as a united political front unseated former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, a similar elite-driven coalition would be necessary to challenge President Tinubu’s reelection bid.
