Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has shared the reasons behind his departure from the team. Despite leading Nigeria to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Peseiro revealed that he had planned to leave his role after the tournament due to the high level of stress and fatigue he experienced.

In an interview with SABC, Peseiro stated, "I decided that when I finish the AFCON, I will leave. I had put too much effort into my job, it was too much stress. Even if I had won the AFCON, I would still have left."

Peseiro, who was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in May 2022, expressed his gratitude for the experience, saying, "Nigeria was an amazing job, with good players. We played very well in the AFCON. I think our team was the best until we lost to Cote d'Ivoire in the tournament."

The 64-year-old Portuguese tactician had previously coached Saudi Arabia and Venezuela before his stint with the Super Eagles. His contract expired in February, marking the end of his tenure as head coach.
