Former President Goodluck Jonathan has encouraged Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remain resolute amid the ongoing political crisis in the state. Jonathan likened the challenges Fubara is facing to battles that prepare leaders for greatness, saying, “Nobody becomes a general without fighting wars.”

Jonathan spoke on Sunday during the first Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture held at Nihi community in the Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The crisis in Rivers stems from a rift between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over control of the state’s political structure. The feud has led to division within the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Whatever challenges you are meeting now are baking you to be a general in politics. With your total commitment and the support of the people of Rivers State, God will surely see you through. 

Jonathan emphasized the importance of peace in Rivers State, calling it the economic and political hub of the Niger Delta. He warned that unrest in the state could destabilize the entire region and negatively impact Nigeria’s economy.

“We want a peaceful Rivers because Rivers State is the center of the Niger Delta. If we create serious perturbation in Rivers State, we are creating a crisis in the Niger Delta, which is not good for our economy as a nation,” Jonathan said

Jonathan called for calm, urging politicians to respect tenures and allow those in office to work without interference. He added, “We don’t need to kill ourselves over any political office. Allow those who are there to do their work, and after that, anything can happen.”

Governor Fubara expressed his appreciation for Jonathan’s unwavering support, particularly during the most challenging moments of his administration.

“He has stood with me in this most difficult period of our administration. The least I can do is to honor him and share in this moment,” Fubara said.

The event highlighted Jonathan’s call for unity and his role as a stabilizing figure in Rivers State’s political landscape.
