Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has opened up about his relationship with the church and how his music has evolved beyond traditional Christian boundaries.

Speaking on a recent episode of the CreativiTEA Podcast, the Mavin Records artist said that while his faith in God remains unwavering, his musical calling doesn’t entirely align with the structure of church ministry.

“I love God and I’m very much involved in church, but I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting,” he shared.

The singer also addressed the criticism he sometimes receives from certain members of the Christian community for performing in church settings, explaining that his songs, though not strictly gospel, convey messages rooted in positivity and depth.

“I’ve gotten some backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is my music spreads positivity. It touches on issues the church tries to avoid,” he said.

Known for his soulful voice and heartfelt love songs, Johnny Drille emphasized that love—one of his core themes—is deeply spiritual and deserves more open discussion within the church.

“The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings, and you hear Davido and Wizkid songs. What if the church decides to start doing their own Christian love songs?” he added.
