Former Nigeria international Dominic Iorfa has condemned the decision of the Super Eagles players to boycott training ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoff semi-final clash against Gabon, describing the development as “disgusting” and unpatriotic.

 

Iorfa, fondly remembered as the “Speedstar” during his playing days, expressed disappointment that players would allow disputes over match bonuses and incentives to overshadow national pride.

 

“The players that are refusing to train because of match bonuses or incentives — it’s a disgusting thing to talk about,” Iorfa said. “It’s surprising to Europeans when they hear the kind of money African players get for playing for their countries.”

 

Recalling his time at Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in the early 1990s, Iorfa noted that his English and American teammates — including Ray Wilkins, Kenny Sansom, David Seaman, Paul Parker, and Roy Wegerle — were often shocked to learn that African players were paid significant sums for representing their nations.

 

“European players only get incentives when they qualify for major tournaments,” he added. “How will these players refuse to train because of bonuses despite the huge salaries they earn from their clubs?”

 

The former striker emphasized that the national team was instrumental in building the global reputation of many Nigerian stars, arguing that most players’ profiles would not have risen without the platform provided by international football.

 

Iorfa further reminded today’s players that many of Nigeria’s football legends earned their fame through the domestic league before moving abroad — a journey that, he said, was rooted in dedication, not financial demands.

 

“Back in the day, many of Nigeria’s iconic and legendary players first rose to prominence through their performances in the local league,” he said. “That was what made them household names before the world took notice.”
