The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has vowed to intensify efforts to eliminate all forms of election malpractice, including vote-buying, as the country prepares for future elections.

 

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), made the commitment on Tuesday, November 26, 2025, in Abuja during the swearing-in of Prof. Adeniran Tella as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).

 

Describing the occasion as “a solemn occasion; an occasion of call to duty,” Amupitan underscored the weight of the responsibility placed on electoral officials. “This is a profound responsibility, placing you at the forefront of Nigeria’s democratic journey in one of our states,” he said.

 

He reiterated the commission’s commitment to credible elections, adding, “The credibility of our electoral system is the very foundation upon which our democracy stands. Your role as a Resident Electoral Commissioner is absolutely critical to the success of this democratic project. I must be unequivocal and I admonish you that the integrity of our elections is non-negotiable.”

 

Amupitan further warned that compromising INEC’s procedures or values would not be tolerated, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the commission’s standards.

 

This comes amid growing public demand for transparent elections and stronger measures against electoral fraud as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
