Ifeoma Onumonu Scores in Fifth Consecutive Game for Montpellier in Loss to Dijon
Nigeria forward Ifeoma Onumonu continued her impressive goal-scoring form, netting her fifth consecutive goal for Montpellier in their 4-2 defeat to Dijon in a French Women’s Division 1 clash on Saturday.
Montpellier started strong, taking the lead in the 5th minute through Marie Levasseur at the Stade Gaston Gérard. However, Dijon quickly turned the tide, equalizing in the 29th minute via Viktoria Pinther and taking the lead two minutes later through Malgorzata Grec.
Klaudia Jeslińska extended Dijon’s advantage to 3-1 nine minutes into the second half. Onumonu reignited hope for Montpellier in the 75th minute, scoring her fifth goal in as many matches, reducing the deficit to 3-2.
However, Meriame Terchoun sealed the victory for Dijon with an 81st-minute strike.
The Nigerian international, who played the full 90 minutes, now has six league goals in nine appearances this season. Her scoring streak includes six consecutive matches for club and country, notably netting during Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to France.
In addition to her goal-scoring exploits, the former Gotham FC forward has registered one assist for Montpellier this season.
Montpellier sits in fifth place on the Division 1 table with 16 points from 10 matches. They will look to bounce back when they face Fleury 91 in their next league fixture on December 14, 2024.
