Ibom Angels Secure Instant Return to NWFL Premiership with 2-0 Win Over Osun Babes
Ibom Angels have made a swift return to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after defeating Osun Babes 2-0 in the Championship promotion playoffs at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Sunday.
The Uyo-based team, who had previously won all four of their group stage matches, continued their impressive form in this crucial fixture. Abasiofon Uwah and Ijeoma Onweagba scored in each half to secure the win and promotion for Ibom Angels.
Uwah, the team captain, opened the scoring in the 10th minute, giving her side an early advantage. Osun Babes pushed hard to level the score, but Onweagba extended Ibom Angels' lead with a powerful long-range shot in the 61st minute.
Despite being awarded a penalty in the 75th minute, Osun Babes' hopes of a comeback were dashed when Kafayat Bashiru's spot-kick sailed wide in the 78th minute. Ibom Angels' defense held firm against continued pressure, securing their place in the top flight.
This marks Ibom Angels' successful return to the NWFL Premiership, replicating their feat of bouncing back to the top tier after relegation in 2021. Their previous return was achieved in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State in 2022.
