In the opening leg of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers held in Bamako, Mali, Nigeria’s U-17 girls battled Burkina Faso to a hard-fought 1-1 draw last Saturday.

Coach Bankole Olowookere fielded a formidable lineup, featuring Uzoma Christiana in goal, supported by a strong defensive line-up and an attacking front led by Chidi Harmony.

Despite early dominance from the Flamingos, the first half concluded without any breakthrough on the scoreboard. However, ten minutes into the second half, Harmony seized the opportunity to break the deadlock, providing Nigeria with a crucial lead.

Despite subsequent chances to extend their advantage, Nigeria faltered in converting their opportunities, allowing Burkina Faso to capitalize late in the game. Rainata Oubda’s equalizer, scored with just five minutes remaining, denied Nigeria the victory they had fought hard for.

Nevertheless, the Flamingos can find solace in securing a draw away from home, setting the stage for a decisive return leg on May 18, 2024, at the iconic MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria’s political capital.

The stakes are high as the winner of the return leg will advance to face either Liberia or Senegal in the final and deciding round of the qualifiers, with the ultimate goal of securing a spot in the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
