As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Dr. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, joined other leaders across the country to reaffirm the unity, resilience, and shared purpose of Nigerians—regardless of tribe, religion, or region.

 

Speaking during his Independence Day address on October 1st, Governor Alia described Nigeria’s journey since 1960 as one defined by “an unyielding spirit of oneness,” calling on citizens to reflect on the visionary leadership of the country’s founding fathers and the sacrifices they made to secure freedom, peace, and unity.

 

“This celebration is more than a ceremony,” the governor said. “It is a call to reflect on the dreams of our heroes past, who laid down their lives for a united Nigeria.”

 

Education at the Heart of Benue’s Transformation

 

Governor Alia identified education as the most powerful legacy left by Nigeria’s founding fathers, describing it as the foundation for national development. Since assuming office, his administration has renovated 354 schools across the state and employed over 9,000 qualified teachers to improve the standard of education in Benue.

 

“Education must be the starting point of every child’s journey,” he stated. “We have invested heavily to raise the standard of learning in every corner of the state.”

 

Infrastructure and Economic Growth

 

Under his leadership, Benue State has recorded significant achievements in infrastructure development, making headlines as the first state to construct flyover bridges and dual-carriage access roads that connect Benue to neighbouring states and communities.

 

One of the administration’s standout projects is the revival of the Otobi Water Works, which now provides clean drinking water to Otukpo, Otobi, and surrounding areas.

 

The governor also revealed that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Works and Housing, is partnering with the state on further road upgrades and construction, acknowledging the sincerity of purpose that has drawn national support for Benue’s growth.

 

Agricultural Revamp and Industrial Investment

 

True to Benue’s identity as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” the Alia administration is spearheading an agricultural revival. During the 2025 cropping season, the governor launched a large-scale distribution of subsidised farm inputs to farmers across the state.

 

In addition, new agro-industrial investments such as the Benue Fruits Factory and Food Basket Breweries are underway, attracting both local and foreign investors and opening up job opportunities for thousands of Benue residents.

 

Youth Empowerment and Civil Service Reform

 

Governor Alia highlighted his administration’s investment in youth and women empowerment, noting that over 10,000 young people and 40,000 civil servants have benefitted from skills development and entrepreneurship training programs.

 

“Our goal is to build a self-reliant workforce and create a future where our youth can thrive without relying on government jobs alone,” he said.

 

In a bid to manage resources effectively, the governor announced that his government is implementing cost-cutting reforms to free up funds for essential services and developmental projects.

 

Security and Healthcare

 

Governor Alia also addressed the ongoing security challenges in the state, assuring citizens that measures are in place to ensure peace and protect farmlands and communities.

 

He praised the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces, calling them “gallant men and women” who have worked tirelessly to restore order.

 

“With courage, intelligence, and collaboration, we will restore peace to every inch of our land,” he said.

 

In the health sector, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to providing essential medications and upgraded healthcare facilities, particularly in rural areas, stressing that “health is wealth.”

 

A Call for Unity and Hope

 

In his closing remarks, Governor Alia called on all Nigerians to embrace unity and collective purpose despite current challenges.

 

“My dear people, let us renew our commitment to unity. One people, one purpose, one destiny,” he said. “In the face of hardship, let us keep hope alive. In our diversity, let us find strength. In our challenges, let us find opportunity.”

 

As Nigeria reflects on 65 years of independence, Governor Alia’s message is one of renewed hope, strategic growth, and unwavering belief in the Nigerian spirit.
