Governor Hyacinth Iormen Alia has made history in Benue State by achieving significant developmental strides within just two years in office—without borrowing from the Federal Government or any non-governmental organization. His administration has become a model of prudent governance and grassroots-oriented leadership.

Before entering politics, Governor Alia was known for his evangelical missions across rural communities. This spiritual journey brought him into close contact with the people, helping him understand their true needs and aspirations. This deep connection with his roots has now translated into impactful policies and visible development.

Benue State is a land of deep spiritual heritage, where most families have dedicated members—Reverend Fathers or Sisters—serving God. Governor Alia, himself a priest, is seen as one of the covenant children of God, chosen in a time of need to deliver his people from insecurity, underdevelopment, and neglect. Many draw a parallel between his story and that of the biblical King David—anointed to lead and protect his people.

Scripture reminds us in 1 Samuel 16:7 that God looks not at the physical stature but at the heart. Governor Alia has proven to have a heart for service, driven not by political ambition but by divine purpose. The vision was clear, even if it tarried. As written in Habakkuk 2:3: “Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” At the appointed time, Governor Alia emerged with a mission of peace, restoration, and renewal.

In just two years, his administration has achieved what many could not in a decade. He has completed and commissioned numerous capital projects, notably the reconstruction of major roads that previously claimed lives. Transportation has been improved with the provision of government-supported vehicles, easing movement in and out of the state.

Education has also received attention through support for Universal Basic Education, while social reforms have curbed unproductive nightlife, closed down illicit liquor spots, and lowered traditional bride prices—empowering families and enabling more young women to marry with dignity.

He has paid civil servants’ outstanding arrears and ensured that salaries are disbursed before the end of each month. Governor Alia believes in continuity and development, seen in his ongoing renovations of the state stadium and the Government House. He revived Lobi Stars Football Club and boosted sporting programs, encouraging the youth to compete nationally and internationally.

Notably, he is the first governor to construct a flyover in Benue State, connecting vital routes and transforming the urban landscape. These innovative initiatives have earned him widespread acceptance and the affectionate title, “Yes Father.”

Benue has remained stable and united under his leadership. Unlike the political turbulence seen elsewhere, the people of Benue stood unanimously behind him—especially the underprivileged—trusting in his ability to lead with fairness and integrity. He has exposed secret agreements made by past leaders with herdsmen and firmly resisted external threats and injustice.

Governor Alia’s leadership has also rekindled the spirit of true patriotism among Benue elders, many of whom had previously been entangled in self-serving politics. Like Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Alia represents a new era of leadership grounded in service, not self-interest. Even critics are beginning to acknowledge that aligning with him may be the only path to true progress.

Benue’s challenge, like much of Nigeria, is the dominance of politics over industry. As Peter Obi rightly said, “No country can grow when its politics is more profitable than its industry.” Governor Alia is reversing that trend by supporting local agriculture and creating opportunities for indigenous entrepreneurs.

The recent spate of insecurity has reminded all that no village is immune. In response, elders are now aligning with the Governor to protect their ancestral lands and prevent a return to ignorance and exploitation. As Ezra 5:5 says, “The eye of their God was upon the elders… so that they could not stop them from rebuilding.” Unity, not betrayal, brings fulfillment. Together, Benue is rising again.
